Light Phone III Review: Specs, Battery Life, and Size

The Light Phone III is a 5G minimalist phone with a camera, directions, and a hotspot, but no browser or app store. It suits someone who wants one phone to replace a smartphone and can live with texts instead of messaging apps.

Who the Light Phone III is for

The Light Phone III suits someone on AT&T, T-Mobile, or another carrier on Light’s compatible list, and someone who wants a calm screen without E Ink. The matte OLED has a black-and-white interface, and photos still come out in color.

Skip it if you need WhatsApp, a new Verizon line, or a phone you can use right away.

Price and availability

Light sells the Phone III from its own store, and the store takes reservations for the next batch. Its order page gives the delivery window, so read it before you reserve. Light refunds an order canceled before it ships, but after delivery it takes back only defective or unopened phones.

A US-only bundle includes the phone and two years of Light Service for $59 a month with 1 GB of data, or $89 with unlimited data. Buyers outside the US may owe tax, VAT, or duty on delivery.

What matters

Light OS and its tools

Light OS is a toolbox you manage from the dashboard. Its tools include an alarm, timer, calculator, calendar, directory, directions, notes, music, podcasts, weather, an authenticator for two-factor codes, a hotspot, and rideshare for Uber and Lyft.

Light’s developer program opened in summer 2026, and its vetted Tool Library is due to go live in November. Library tools must have no infinite feeds, no ads, and no tracking. A planned Developer Mode will also let you side-load other APKs, though they may not run well.

Dimensions, weight, and build

The Phone III measures 106 by 71.5 by 12 mm and weighs 124 g. That is about 4.2 by 2.8 by 0.5 in and 4.4 oz, so it is short and fairly thick. The body is aluminum, glass, and SORPLAS recycled plastic.

The screen is AMOLED behind matte glass, at 1080 by 1240 pixels, so it is close to square. It is rated IP54, so treat the phone as splash resistant, not waterproof.

Storage, chip, and connections

Storage is 128 GB with 6 GB of RAM, with no expandable memory or SD card slot. The chip is a Qualcomm SM4450.

Connections include 5G, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, and a USB-C 2.0 port. The phone takes a nano SIM or an eSIM, and it has two microphones with noise cancellation and stereo speakers.

5G and US carrier fit

Light sells the Phone III unlocked and never intentionally locks the device. The phone falls back to 4G, but it needs a 5G data plan. Compatible carriers are AT&T, T-Mobile, Light Service, Noble Mobile, Mint, and US Mobile (Light Speed only), with Verizon marked as certification in progress.

Verizon is the catch. An active Verizon SIM works, but you cannot activate a new Verizon line on the phone yet. Consumer Cellular, Metro by T-Mobile, Straight Talk, Tracfone, Google Fi, and Cricket are also incompatible.

Camera specs

The rear sensor is 50 MP, but photos default to 12 MP, or 4,000 by 3,000 pixels. Focus is center only, with a fixed focal length near a 28 mm equivalent. A dedicated two-step shutter button focuses on a half press and opens the camera from anywhere.

There is an 8 MP front camera, and the interface stays black and white while photos are color. You can send pictures by text or copy them to a computer over USB-C, so expect a point-and-shoot, not a smartphone camera.

Hotspot and data

The hotspot is a tool you add from the dashboard, and it shares the phone’s connection over Wi-Fi. It depends on your SIM, because the phone checks whether a SIM supports hotspot. Our list of dumbphones with a hotspot compares how other phones share data with a laptop.

On Light Service, the $25 plan includes 1 GB of data, so heavy tethering suits the $45 unlimited plan. That plan slows to 3 Mbps after 22 GB.

Battery life and charging

There is no precise battery rating, though the battery is nearly double the Light Phone II’s. Light is “confident it should last through a full day of normal usage, and hopefully much more.”

The rated range is one to three days per charge. But directions, the hotspot, long calls, and weak signal drain it faster, so plan on a nightly charge and treat a second day as a bonus.

The phone charges over USB-C, and the same port takes wired headphones because there is no headphone jack.

No browser, no store

The Phone III will never have social media, internet browsing, email, news, or ads. It has no WhatsApp, Signal, or Spotify streaming, though a Signal tool from Light is in the works.

Two-factor codes work through the Authenticator tool. If you are leaving an iPhone, turn off iMessage and RCS first, or you will miss texts. Also, the interface is English only.

Updates and support

Light sends Light OS updates over the air, and its change log reaches v582 on September 15, 2026. Weather and Authenticator arrived in July 2026.

Support is by email. Light designed the phone to be easier to repair, and it expects to offer screen, USB port, and battery repairs. US buyers can also add an insurance plan run by Akko.

Limitations

The wait and the carrier list come first. Light ships reserved phones in batches. Verizon is still in certification, and many discount carriers are incompatible.

The phone gives up messaging apps, a browser, and an interface in any language but English. The phone has NFC, but features that would use it, such as a possible digital wallet, are not yet available.

Light’s returns are narrow, so decide before you open the box. If your bank, employer, or family chat needs an app, this is the wrong phone.

Alternatives
