Mudita Kompakt Review: E Ink, Offline Maps, No App Store

The Mudita Kompakt is an E Ink phone with calls, texts, offline maps, and a hotspot, but no app store. It suits someone who wants a calm screen and directions without a feed, and it gives up 5G, a quick screen, and a good camera.

Who the Mudita Kompakt is for

It suits a reader who wants EPUB and PDF books on E Ink, or a walker who downloads offline maps in advance. It also fits a flip phone user who misses typing on a screen and seeing a map.

Skip it if you need WhatsApp, a camera you would share from, or a phone that cannot run extra apps, since a computer can sideload them.

Price and availability

Mudita sells the Kompakt from its own store and ships to the US, where checkout picks the North American version for you. Shipping is free, delivery outside the EU takes 5 to 7 days, and a current promotion adds a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. You bring your own SIM or eSIM.

What matters

US carrier support

In Mudita’s own tests in Chicago, Detroit, and Orlando, the Global version worked on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. US orders get the North American version, which carries FCC and PTCRB certification.

The tests with named carriers cover the Global version, so compare Mudita’s band list with your carrier before you commit. The phone supports VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling, and it takes a nano-SIM or an eSIM. The 30-day guarantee is your fallback if calls fail, as long as the promotion runs, but Mudita’s terms put return shipping to Poland on you.

The E Ink screen and typing

E Ink redraws in steps, so it suits reading and short texts better than scrolling. The phone also reads EPUB and PDF e-books. Mudita is adding a Force Refresh option in MuditaOS K 2.0 to clear ghosting on demand.

Typing happens on a touch keyboard with a suggestion bar, auto-correction, and 38 languages.

Offline maps and the hotspot

The Maps app gives voice-guided directions for walking, cycling, and driving from regions you download in advance. It finds your position from satellite signals, without Wi-Fi or Bluetooth scanning, so the first fix can be slow indoors. An optional A-GPS setting, off by default, speeds that up.

Messaging and the app gap

Messaging is SMS and MMS, with group chats since version 1.4.0. The Kompakt has no RCS, WhatsApp, or Signal, and sideloaded apps that need Google Services will likely fail. Group texts work, but a number tied to RCS will likely need to de-register in Google Messages, which can take up to 30 days.

Sideloading takes a computer, Mudita Center, and a USB-C cable, and Mudita does not cover problems it causes. Even Mudita’s support page points to community members installing the Aurora Store, so the door stays open. MuditaOS K 2.0, planned for November, will add InkApps, a curated app collection, and an Android app manager.

Battery

Mudita rates the battery at up to six days in standby mode. That is a standby test, so calls, maps, and music will run it down sooner.

Charging works over USB-C or wirelessly. A setting caps the charge to protect the battery. Repairs by anyone but Mudita’s authorized technicians void the warranty.

Camera

The rear camera is 8 MP with a dual-color flash, and Mudita pitches it for documents and snapshots. Photos show in black and white on the screen and arrive in color on other devices. There is only a rear camera, and the Kompakt cannot record or play video.

Mudita says Offline+, its offline mode, cuts the cellular radio and microphones at the hardware level. It also turns off the camera, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.

Software, warranty, and repair

Mudita promises five years of software and security updates and a 24-month warranty in the US and other eligible regions, with 12 months on the battery. Version 1.6.1 reached all Kompakt users on October 7, 2026.

Support runs by email, and Mudita promises a reply within 24 hours on business days. A repair means mailing the phone to Mudita, which covers shipping in warranty cases and estimates 14 to 30 days once the phone arrives.

Limitations

The Kompakt tops out at 4G LTE, which works on US networks, but it has no 5G. It also has no WhatsApp, no Signal, and no RCS, so chats with other phones stay on SMS and MMS.

The E Ink screen is slow, the camera is basic, and positioning relies mainly on satellites. Offline+ blocks emergency calls, and the body is splash resistant, not waterproof.

The Kompakt has no internet browser or app store out of the box. Sideloading can add either, so it is not a hard boundary. We would skip it if you need a phone that says no for you.

Alternatives

Does the Mudita Kompakt have Google Maps?

No. MuditaOS K is built to run without Google Services, so Mudita’s own offline Maps app handles directions. Google Maps would need sideloading, and sideloaded apps that depend on Google Services will likely not work.

Can the Mudita Kompakt run WhatsApp?

Is there a newer Mudita phone than the Kompakt?

No. Mudita’s lineup is two phones, the Kompakt and the Mudita Pure. The Pure is a keypad phone, not a successor. New features for the Kompakt arrive through MuditaOS K updates.
