Light Phone 3 vs Mudita Kompakt: Matte OLED or E Ink?

By Finn Albar

The Light Phone III wins on tools, photos, and 5G, while the Mudita Kompakt wins on reading, offline maps, and price. Neither runs WhatsApp or a web browser out of the box. Both suit someone ready to leave a smartphone for calls, texts, and a few tools.

If fewer apps is all you want, a minimalist launcher on the phone you have is the lighter step.

Screen: matte OLED or E Ink

The Light Phone III uses an AMOLED panel behind matte glass, and Light keeps the interface black and white. It redraws like any phone screen, so lists, photos, and maps move quickly.

The Mudita Kompakt has a true E Ink screen, the paper-like display you know from e-readers. It stays readable in bright sunlight. But E Ink redraws in steps, so scrolling and typing feel slower.

Winner: the Mudita Kompakt, if the screen is the reason you are switching. A slow screen makes reading easy and long scrolling tiresome. Pick the Light Phone III if speed matters more, and see our E Ink phones guide for the wider field.

Tools and apps

The Light Phone III comes with an alarm, calendar, notes, music, podcasts, directions, a hotspot, and Weather. It also has Authenticator for two-factor codes and Rideshare for Uber and Lyft. You add or remove each tool from a web dashboard, and the calendar can sync a Google calendar.

Rideshare runs through Tremp, an SMS ride service that adds its own fee to the fare. A vetted Tool Library of community tools is due to open in November, and each tool must avoid feeds and respect your privacy. Light also plans a Developer Mode for side-loading other Android apps, though they may not run well.

The Mudita Kompakt ships with its own apps instead: maps, an e-book reader for EPUB and PDF files, music, notes, weather, and a voice recorder. There is no app store, but Mudita Center on a computer can sideload Android apps. Still, apps needing Google Services will likely fail, and the warranty does not cover problems they cause.

Mudita plans MuditaOS K 2.0 for November 2026. It will add InkApps, a curated app collection, and Google Calendar sync that stays off until you turn it on.

Winner: the Light Phone III. Authenticator and Rideshare cover two common reasons to keep a smartphone, and Light builds or vets every tool it offers. The Kompakt is the better reader, but its open sideloading is a door you may not want open.

Maps and navigation

The two phones handle directions in opposite ways. The Light Phone III plans routes online through HERE, with spoken turns for walking and driving. It also has a bicycle mode and a transit mode for subways, trains, and buses.

The phone will likely keep a GPS lock with no service. Even so, it cannot create a route without a data connection.

The Mudita Kompakt works the other way. You download a country or region first, and then you need no internet to search or view the map. It also gives turn-by-turn voice guidance for walking, cycling, and driving.

Winner: the Mudita Kompakt, because its maps keep working on a trail or a rural road. A city commuter on transit is better off with the Light Phone III. Our guide to dumbphones with GPS compares both with other phones that give directions.

Messaging

Both phones send SMS and MMS, including photos and group threads. The Light Phone III also sends audio messages and GIFs, and Light is building its own Signal tool. Neither phone has WhatsApp, Signal, or iMessage out of the box.

Turn off iMessage and RCS before you switch to the Light, or you may miss texts. The Kompakt supports SMS and MMS, not RCS, so take the same step before moving your number to either phone.

The Kompakt has one extra path, which is sideloading. A sideloaded WhatsApp may run, but Mudita guarantees no third-party app.

Winner: the Light Phone III for texting, because Light builds audio messages and photos into the thread. Pick the Kompakt only if WhatsApp is a must and you accept that it may not work.

Camera

The Light Phone III has the stronger camera by a wide margin. It has a higher-resolution rear sensor than Mudita’s, a front camera, and photo, video, and selfie modes. A two-step shutter button focuses on a half press and opens the camera from any screen.

Photos come out in color even though the interface is black and white. You can send them by text or copy them to a computer over USB-C.

The Mudita Kompakt has a rear camera with a dual-color flash, and Mudita pitches it for documents and snapshots. Photos show in black and white on the E Ink screen and in color on other devices. Winner: the Light Phone III.

Battery as each maker rates it

Mudita rates the Kompakt at up to six days, but that figure is for standby. So calls, maps, and music will bring it down.

The Light Phone III has no precise battery figure. It should last a full day of normal use, “and hopefully much more.” The rated range is one to three days per charge, but directions, the hotspot, and weak signal drain it faster.

Winner: the Mudita Kompakt. Its E Ink screen uses little power, and a rating in days beats a promise of one full day. Plan on charging the Light most nights.

Privacy and the Offline+ switch

The Mudita Kompakt has a physical Offline+ switch on its left side. It cuts the cellular modem and microphones at the hardware level. It also turns off the camera, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth in software.

There is a catch: you cannot make emergency calls while Offline+ is on. MuditaOS K 2.0 will let you keep Bluetooth or the camera on in Offline+. Mudita also promises it never tracks you, shows ads, or sells your data.

The Light Phone III has no privacy switch. Instead, it will never have social media, browsing, email, news, or ads, and Light cannot see your Directions trip history. Winner: the Mudita Kompakt, because a hardware switch is a boundary you control.

US carriers and availability

The Light Phone III is unlocked. It works on AT&T, T-Mobile, Light’s own service, Noble Mobile, Mint, and US Mobile on Light Speed. Verizon certification is still in progress.

An active Verizon SIM works, but you cannot yet activate a new Verizon line on the phone. Google Fi, Cricket, Metro by T-Mobile, Consumer Cellular, and Straight Talk are incompatible. Light also takes no returns for a carrier missing from its list.

Light sells the phone from its own store by reservation, which holds your place in line for the next phone. The product page shows the current delivery window.

Winner: the Mudita Kompakt, because it has passed tests on all three major carriers and you skip Light’s reservation line. Pick the Light Phone III for 5G if your carrier is on Light’s list.

Price

The Mudita Kompakt costs far less than the Light Phone III. Light offers an optional two-year Light Service contract that spreads the cost into monthly payments. Light’s price excludes tax and shipping, while Mudita ships free.

Winner: the Mudita Kompakt. The Light Phone III asks a premium for 5G, the camera, and Light’s tools, so we recommend it only if you will use all three.

Returns and warranty

Mudita lets you cancel any time before shipment. Under a current promotion, you can return the Kompakt within 30 days of delivery for a full refund, but you pay return shipping. Outside the promotion, the window is 14 days.

Mudita’s warranty runs two years, with one year on the battery, and Mudita promises five years of software and security updates. Spare parts such as the battery and display should stay available for at least seven years.

Light refunds an order canceled before it ships, or a phone sent back still in its shrink wrap. After you open the box, Light takes returns only for manufacturer defects, within one year of your order.

Winner: the Mudita Kompakt, because you can try it at home and send it back. With the Light Phone III, decide before you break the seal.

When to pick a lighter step instead

Both phones ask you to give up WhatsApp, a browser, and most apps. If your bank, employer, or family chat needs an app, neither is the right step yet.

A minimalist launcher hides apps on the Android phone you already own, and it costs little or nothing. If you want fewer tools, not more, a plain flip from best dumbphones is the stronger pause.

Which one to pick

  • You read books on your phone: the Mudita Kompakt, for E Ink and the EPUB and PDF reader.
  • You walk, bike, or drive where signal drops: the Mudita Kompakt, for maps you download first.
  • You ride transit in a city: the Light Phone III, for online routes with subway, train, and bus lines.
  • You need two-factor codes or rideshare: the Light Phone III, for Authenticator and Rideshare.
  • You take photos to share: the Light Phone III, for the color camera with video and a shutter button.
  • You are on Verizon, or want to try before you commit: the Mudita Kompakt, for the named Verizon tests and the return window.
  • You want the longest gap between charges: the Mudita Kompakt, for its multi-day rating.

Each pick gives up the other phone’s strengths. With the Kompakt you lose 5G and Light’s camera, and the Kompakt has no rideshare or two-factor app. With the Light Phone III you lose E Ink, maps that work with no signal, and an easy return.

Common questions

Is the Light Phone 3 or the Mudita Kompakt better for WhatsApp?

Neither runs WhatsApp out of the box. The Mudita Kompakt can sideload Android apps from a computer, but apps that need Google Services will likely fail. Light has no WhatsApp tool, and dumbphones with WhatsApp covers phones that run it.

Can the Light Phone III give directions without a signal?

Only in part: the phone will likely keep a GPS lock with no service, but it cannot plan a new route without data. Leave the phone on and charging overnight, and the GPS finds you faster.

Which phone has a headphone jack?

The Mudita Kompakt has a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Light Phone III has none, but its USB-C port works with wired USB-C headphones. Both phones also have Bluetooth.

Do the Light Phone III and Mudita Kompakt work in languages other than English?

The Kompakt does, with eight interface languages, including Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese. The Light Phone III runs in English only. Still, it displays incoming messages in many languages, and its keyboard offers QWERTY, QWERTZ, and AZERTY layouts.

Final thoughts

The Light Phone III is the better phone if you want 5G, a camera you would share from, and tools like Authenticator and Rideshare. It asks for a higher price and a wait for your reservation.

The Mudita Kompakt is the calmer pause, with E Ink, maps that work offline, a longer battery rating, and a return window. Both give up WhatsApp and the browser, so make sure that trade fits your week first.
