Best 5G Flip Phones in 2026: Basic Flips, Not Foldables

By Finn Albar

Three 5G flip phones: a closed Consumer Cellular Iris Easy Flip 2, an open TCL Flip 4 5G, and a Lively Jitterbug Flip3

The best 5G flip phone for most people is the TCL Flip 4 5G, the cheapest 5G flip on a major carrier, if you are on T-Mobile or Metro. On AT&T or Verizon, the Sonim XP3plus 5G is the 5G flip those carriers sell, though it is a rugged work phone that costs far more.

Older adults have two plan-bound picks, the Jitterbug Flip3 and the Iris Easy Flip 2. The Light Flip is the one to wait for if you want no browser at all.

These are basic flips, not foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr. None of the five runs WhatsApp.

You may not need 5G yet. No major US carrier has announced an end date for 4G LTE, so a 4G flip with VoLTE still works, and best cheap flip phones covers those. To keep your smartphone and cut its clutter instead, try a minimalist launcher first.

How we picked

To make this list, a phone has to meet four conditions:

  • It is a flip with a keypad, not a foldable smartphone.
  • It supports 5G on its maker’s or carrier’s spec page.
  • You can order it new in the US, or reserve it from the maker.
  • It has no Google Play Store.

The Sonim XP5plus 5G is a 5G keypad phone too, but it is a bar, not a flip. Our Sonim XP5plus 5G review covers it. Foldables run full Android with every app, so they stay out.

The order starts with the cheapest flip on a major carrier, then the rugged flip all three carriers sell. The two flips tied to their own plans come next, and the flip you reserve and wait for comes last.

The TCL Flip 4 5G is the newest KaiOS flip and the only KaiOS phone on 5G. It has VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, an eSIM, and a hotspot, and TCL rates it for up to 40 hours of talk time.

Pick it if you are on T-Mobile or Metro by T-Mobile and want a cheap flip that keeps up with the network. Those two carriers sell it, and its bands match T-Mobile’s: the LTE list leaves out band 13, which Verizon relies on. So on Verizon it is the wrong pick, and on AT&T, ask before you buy.

The weak spot is how much internet it keeps. KaiOS has a browser, the KaiStore, and shortcuts to YouTube and Google Maps, so it is not a hard stop. For users under 18, Kids Mode blocks the browser and the KaiStore, and the phone has no published water rating.

2. Sonim XP3plus 5G: best 5G flip on AT&T and Verizon

The Sonim XP3plus 5G is the only 5G flip that all three major carriers sell: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Business. It supports voice over 5G and an eSIM, and it comes with or without a camera.

Pick it for a job site, or if you drop phones. IP68 and MIL-STD-810H ratings, a push-to-talk key, an emergency key, and a removable battery come standard. On Verizon, this is the 5G flip to get, because Verizon’s consumer store sells only 4G basic phones.

Toughness has a cost in your pocket. At about 245 g, the XP3plus is heavy for a flip, and its price varies by carrier and sales channel. You keep a browser, an FM radio, and a music player, but there is no Play Store, and no maps app appears in its user guide.

3. Lively Jitterbug Flip3: best 5G flip with a help button

The Jitterbug Flip3 is Lively’s flip for older adults, on a locked version of Android 16 Go. It has 5G, Wi-Fi calling, big backlit keys, voice dialing, and a dedicated help button.

Pick it for a parent or grandparent who wants a phone that is easy to see and hear. Service comes only from a Lively plan, and the phone cannot move to another carrier. The help button reaches Urgent Response, a 24/7 help service, only on the Preferred and Premium plans.

The Flip3 gives up a lot for that simplicity. There is no browser, app store, maps, or hotspot, and talk time is rated at up to 12 hours, the shortest here. Lively does not publish its band list, so coverage depends on Lively’s network rather than a carrier you choose.

4. Consumer Cellular Iris Easy Flip 2: best 5G flip on Consumer Cellular

The Iris Easy Flip 2 is Consumer Cellular’s 5G flip, with 5G voice calling, large backlit keys, a favorites key, and an ICE contact for emergencies. It has no browser or app store.

Pick it if you already use Consumer Cellular, or want its plans for an older relative. The phone needs activation on that network, and Consumer Cellular sells it only with a data plan, so it is not a pick for another carrier. Its home screen of large icons and plain menu labels suits someone new to a cell phone.

Its limits are about what is missing. Wi-Fi calling does not appear among its features, so a home with weak signal may struggle. Its ICE contact setting keeps family a button press away, but nothing connects to a monitored service, and talk time is rated at up to 15 hours.

5. Light Flip: best 5G flip with no browser

The Light Flip is a T9 flip on Light OS, with tools instead of apps: directions, a hotspot, music, podcasts, and an authenticator. It has 5G, an eSIM, a headphone jack, and a user-replaceable battery.

Pick it if you want a hard stop and do not mind a wait. Light promises it will never have a browser, email, or social media, and it sells the phone unlocked for any compatible carrier. Check your carrier in Light’s compatibility checker before you reserve one.

The catch is the wait. Light sells it by reservation and ships it in batches, and carrier and FCC certification are still ahead. There is no WhatsApp or Signal either, only splash resistance, and battery life of about a day and a half, so carry a charger on long days.

What 5G changes on a basic phone

For calls and texts, 4G with VoLTE is enough today. No major US carrier has announced an end date for 4G LTE, while 2G and 3G are gone. T-Mobile retired the last 2G network in the US on August 3, 2026.

What decides whether a flip works is VoLTE and the carrier’s approval. Verizon no longer activates 4G phones without VoLTE, AT&T keeps a list of approved phones, and T-Mobile asks you to check VoLTE and its bands before you bring a phone.

5G does not reach further than LTE either. T-Mobile’s farthest-reaching 5G uses the same 600 MHz spectrum as its Extended Range LTE.

Calls gain little. HD Voice already runs over VoLTE, and voice over 5G, where T-Mobile offers it, brings slightly faster call setup.

So buy 5G for the years ahead, not for better calls today. T-Mobile expects to fold LTE into newer technology someday, years from now, and a 5G flip should keep working when that happens.

How to choose a 5G flip

  1. Start with your carrier. The TCL fits T-Mobile and Metro, and the Sonim works on all three major carriers. The Jitterbug and the Iris each need their own plan, and the Light Flip is unlocked.
  2. Decide on the browser. The TCL and the Sonim keep one, while the Jitterbug, the Iris, and the Light Flip do not. For phones that skip the internet entirely, see best phones without internet access.
  3. List the apps you cannot drop. None of the five runs WhatsApp, because WhatsApp ended support for KaiOS and the others have no app store that offers it. Dumbphones with WhatsApp compares phones that do.
  4. Check the SIM if you come from a recent iPhone. US iPhones from the iPhone 14 on use eSIM only. The TCL, the Sonim, and the Light Flip take an eSIM, while the Jitterbug ships with a nano SIM.
  5. Weigh the help button. The Jitterbug connects to a staffed help service on its higher plans, and the Sonim has an emergency key. Best flip phones for seniors compares these features in more depth.

Who should not buy a 5G flip

Skip 5G if a 4G flip on your carrier already suits you. A 4G flip with VoLTE works on all three networks today and usually costs less, and every basic phone in Verizon’s consumer store is 4G.

Skip a flip altogether if you need WhatsApp, a banking app, or a good camera. A locked smartphone such as the Wisephone II keeps WhatsApp and a smartphone camera, and still drops the browser and social media.

And if the problem is a few apps, not the phone, change the phone you have first. Grayscale, app limits, and a short home screen cost nothing.

Common questions

Do flip phones work on 5G?

Some do. Five basic flips in the US support 5G: the TCL Flip 4 5G, Sonim XP3plus 5G, Jitterbug Flip3, Iris Easy Flip 2, and the Light Flip, which you reserve. Most other flips run on 4G LTE, including every basic phone in Verizon’s consumer store.

Will 4G flip phones stop working?

Not on any announced date. No major US carrier has published an end date for 4G LTE, while 2G and 3G are already gone. A 4G flip needs VoLTE and the carrier’s approval to keep working, so check both before you buy.

Does Verizon sell a 5G flip phone?

Not in its consumer store, where every basic phone is 4G. Verizon Business sells the Sonim XP3plus 5G. An unlocked 5G flip also has to be certified for Verizon’s network before it will activate.

Do you need 5G for calls and texts?

No. Calls run over VoLTE on 4G, and HD Voice is a VoLTE feature. Voice over 5G, where T-Mobile offers it, mainly brings slightly faster call setup.

Can a 5G flip phone run WhatsApp?

None of the five here can. WhatsApp ended support for KaiOS, and the other four have no app store that offers it. A locked smartphone or a phone that runs Android apps is the way to keep WhatsApp.

Which 5G flip phone has the longest battery life?

The TCL Flip 4 5G, rated for up to 40 hours of talk time. The Sonim XP3plus 5G is rated for up to 30 hours over 5G voice, while the Jitterbug Flip3 is rated for 12 hours.

Which 5G flip to buy

On T-Mobile or Metro, buy the TCL Flip 4 5G, and accept that KaiOS keeps a browser. On AT&T or Verizon, the Sonim XP3plus 5G is the 5G flip to get, if a rugged work phone fits your pocket and budget.

For an older adult, pick the Jitterbug Flip3 for its help service, or the Iris Easy Flip 2 if the family already uses Consumer Cellular. If you want no browser at all and can wait, reserve the Light Flip.

If none of this needs 5G for you, a 4G flip with VoLTE will keep working, and it costs less.
