The Keyphone Hybrid is a 4G keypad phone with swappable keyboard and camera modules, and no browser or app store. It suits anyone who wants physical keys for calls and texts. There are no maps on the phone, no WhatsApp, and no hotspot.

A good fit is someone who has decided apps are not coming along and wants a camera they can swap. Another is someone whose car shows maps through Android Auto.

Keyphone sells the Hybrid on its Hybrid page with the numeric keypad and the 13 MP camera. The QWERTY keyboard and the 20 MP camera cost extra, and each costs more as a later add-on than when you pick it at checkout. So decide on the keyboard and camera before you order.

Shipping is free in the US. Keyphone sells the phone without a plan, so you bring your own SIM, and its order form turns some carriers away.

The keyboard modules

The Hybrid ships with an enhanced T9 numeric keypad, and a one-handed QWERTY keyboard swaps in for it. Three programmable keys launch tools. On the T9 keypad, the top key opens the alarm on a press, the camera on a double press, and music on a hold.

The Hybrid has a 2.8-inch touchscreen, but you can turn touch input off. That makes the keys the way in, not the glass.

Software and what is missing

The system is custom, built on AOSP 15, with no browser, no social media, and no app store. It does not support sideloading APKs, so the lock holds. The app list covers phone, messaging, contacts, calendar, music, camera, gallery, notes, files, and clock tools.

Google services are optional, and Google sync is promised for a future update. Email is marked as coming soon.

Maps, WhatsApp, and two-factor codes

Waze and Google Maps appear on a car’s display through Android Auto, not on the phone. That helps in a compatible car, but it does nothing on foot, where you need a paper map or a second device.

WhatsApp is not on the app list, and the phone has no app store. Keyphone does not address two-factor codes at all, and the list has no authenticator.

US carriers, SIMs, and activation

The Hybrid works on Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile and on many prepaid brands. But the order form blocks Cricket, Spectrum Mobile, and Xfinity. Its bands are 4G LTE only, including 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 17, 66, and 71, so there is no 5G.

The phone supports VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling. It also takes one physical SIM plus eSIM profiles. Its pages show no Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile approval, so ask your carrier to confirm VoLTE before you rely on it.

Camera modules and storage

The Hybrid has a 13 MP autofocus rear camera and an 8 MP selfie camera. Keyphone sells the 13 MP add-on as a tool-free, quick-release clip-on, and a 20 MP module too.

Storage is 64 GB, plus a microSD slot that takes cards up to 128 GB. Take the 13 MP camera for snapshots and documents, and add the 20 MP module only for detail.

Battery and durability

The battery is a removable 2,400 mAh pack that charges over USB-C, and Keyphone sells a spare. Keyphone’s own site gives no runtime, but the Amazon listing advertises about 48 hours. For a battery replacement, the KP1 manual sends you to Keyphone or a repair professional.

The homepage advertises military-grade housing, yet the FAQ rules out waterproofing, water resistance, and shock protection. The screen does have Gorilla Glass.

Updates, support, and warranty

Keyphone promises over-the-air updates for at least five years from release. It gives no release date or patch schedule, so that is a promise to hold the company to. The limited warranty runs one year and covers factory defects only.

Keyphone LLC is a New York company with email and phone support. Only direct purchases can be returned, within 14 days and with a restocking fee.

Limitations

The Hybrid gives up maps on the phone, WhatsApp, a hotspot, and apps of any kind. Email is only promised, and there is no 5G.

It also costs more than most keypad phones, and the QWERTY keyboard and 20 MP camera add to that. Keyphone’s pages contradict each other in places, such as the military-grade wording against the lack of shock protection, so ask Keyphone before you order.
