About

We help modern professionals reclaim their time and attention through intentional technology choices.

The Story Behind the Site

Hi, I am Finn Albar. I created PauseGadget because I was tired of feeling controlled by my devices. Like many people, I found myself constantly checking notifications, scrolling through feeds out of habit, and losing hours of productive time to a glowing rectangle.

The mainstream tech industry always pushes the narrative that we need faster processors, brighter screens, and more apps to be productive. My experience taught me the exact opposite. I realized that to do better work and live a calmer life, I needed devices that did less.

That realization led to the creation of PauseGadget. We exist to explore the quiet side of the internet.

Our Core Philosophy: Intentional Friction

We do not believe you need to quit technology entirely. The modern world requires us to stay connected. Instead, we advocate for Intentional Friction.

Intentional friction means designing your environment so that bad digital habits are hard to start, and focused work is easy to maintain. This could mean switching to a phone that only calls and texts, installing a launcher that hides colorful app icons, or simply buying a physical alarm clock so your smartphone stays out of the bedroom.

How We Evaluate Products

Most tech review sites judge products based on benchmark scores, camera megapixels, and social media capabilities. We ignore all of that. When we evaluate dumbphones, focus software, and analog tools, we look at completely different criteria:

  • Attention Respect: Does this device serve you, or does it demand your attention through notifications and feeds?
  • Utility vs. Distraction: Does it provide necessary tools (like maps or banking) without opening the door to doomscrolling?
  • Battery Life: Can you leave the charger at home and trust the device to work for days?
  • Build Quality: Is it built to last, or is it a fragile glass slab?

Transparency & Funding

PauseGadget is an independent publication. We are entirely reader-supported. This means that if you click on a link in one of our reviews and make a purchase, we may earn a small affiliate commission at no extra cost to you.

This funding model allows us to maintain our editorial independence. Our recommendations are based strictly on whether a product aligns with the principles of digital minimalism.
